Pre-Blog Photos #1 - Various Countries - Various Dates

McHotDog Classic Breakfast - Yokohama Japan - July 2011
I've been very busy over the past week, so I haven't been able to write a new review. I have 2 full days of travel ahead of me tomorrow, so I might not be able to get a review posted any time soon, and since it's been now over a week since my last post I thought, some of you might be interested in some old photos I took prior to starting writing this blog. If anyone enjoys these, I can continue to dig some out from my old archives and continue to post them here, just let me know on Twitter, or even on Instagram.

The photo above was a McHotDog breakfast item that I was first able to try in July 2011 from a McDonald's in Yokohama Japan.  McHotDogs used to be a regular menu item and have since been discontinued.  I also reviewed a limited edition version McHotDog Chilli a couple months later, which happened to be one of the first reviews on this blog.

McCriollo Breakfast - Bogota Colombia - March 2011

Prior to my trip to Colombia, I checked McDonald's Colombia homepage in order to see if they had any special items, but nothing looked all that interesting.  My original 6 day trip to Bogota was cut down only to 2 days, so I had to make sure I stopped in shortly after my arrival.  I asked my friend to drive me to the nearest McDonald's after a nice home cooked meal, and apparently the nearest one from his flat was about a 20 minute drive.  He told me McDonald's has really struggled in Colombia, and they have been closing rapidly.  I looked over their menu, and sadly there weren't any limited time promotional items, and my Colombian friend asked the employees directly if there was anything special. They said I would have to come back for breakfast, as their only 'Colombian' item was the McCriollo breakfast set.

The following morning I was dropped off downtown by my friends mother on her way to work.  I wasn't hungry right away, so I wandered around in order to build up my appetite. When I did become hungry, it was rather difficult to find a McDonald's.  I found some free WiFi, so I used Google Maps to find the only branch in the city centre. When I found it, I found a branch similar to some Japanese outlets, with the ordering done from the store front that was nearly on the pavement, and you took your order upstairs to the dining room. At the time I was the only person ordering, and it took still a few minutes to receive my order.  I walked upstairs to the dining room, and it was large, stylish and clean, but there was only 2-3 other diners, in a dining room that could have fit maybe 75 people.  Even during these early hours, there was someone constantly cleaning the floor and the tables as people came and left. I sat in a booth next to the window which had a nice view of the square, and the museum across the street.  The coffee, was hands down, the best McDonald's coffee I have ever had.  I guess being Colombia...it better be.  I guess it was worth waiting the extra few minutes for my order, as it seemed everything had just been made to order. The scrambled eggs were surprising as they had sweetcorn mixed into it, and were slightly runnier than scrambled eggs you would get in Canada but still very good. The arepa's (corn flat bread), were slightly harder and chewier than I have had before.  Not sure if this was because it was to Colombian tastes, or if a just poor McDonald's attempt. The sausage, was meatier than the sausage you get in Canada and the U.S. but it wasn't anything special, though, even though it was piping hot, it wasn't dripping in grease, which is a nice change.

Twisty Pasta Breakfast - Hong Kong - Various Dates

Back in 2005, I made my first trip to Hong Kong.  I remember sitting in the Shun Tak Centre (Sheung Wan) waiting for a ferry to Macau with my classmate Roger. I wasn't hungry, I was tired and jet-lagged, but the Twisty Pasta Breakfast caught my eye.  I think this was the first time I had McDonald's outside Canada and the U.S, and though I didn't take a photo of the meal (I started photographing my McDonald's meals in 2006), I remember wondering how many different meals McDonald's had around the world.  I didn't become serious in hunting for McD's items for another year or two, but I will always remember this as the start.

As you can see from the official photos, the Twisty Pasta is not a limited edition meal, its a regular menu item, and its available at all HK and Macau McDonald's but only for breakfast. In HK you can get a Sausage&Egg McMuffin 24-hours a day, but you can only get this during breakfast hours.  Therefore, I have had the Twisty Pasta many times since that first taste in 2005, trying the sausage&egg, grilled chicken, and more recently, being able to add 2 HKD (25 US cents) and have cheese on top. The photo is from my trip to HK with Mini (my girlfriend) in 2010, and its the only photo I have that has both variants.

HK people love their soup noodles, and McDonald's does it rather well.  The noodles are always cooked well, and the broth, isn't overly salty at all.  The sausage & egg are the same you would have on a McMuffin, and the grilled chicken is 'GCB' patty. Strangely, the chicken comes pre-sliced, and the sausage does not. Trying to cut the floating sausage into bite sized pieces with only a plastic spoon, is harder than you would think. Also, you add cheese to the ONLY to the sausage version, but not the chicken, I asked, and they won't add it to the chicken. For the price, its a very filling meal (soup, hashbrown and medium coffee), and because its soup, you might even get a little vegetable in you. It's a much better value than a McMuffin set, which costs about the same and is much less filling.

Chicken Tatsuta Sandwich - Tokyo, Japan - August 2011

The Chicken Tatsuta was apparently a popular McDonald's Japan menu item back in the 90's, and they have been bringing it back for one-month limited time promotions.  Unlike the linked CNN article, mine actually looked quite appetising, and very close to the promotional photos.  According to Wikipedia, Tatsuta is a special way of deep frying.  The bun was the softest, and freshest bun I have ever had at a McDonald's, but unfortunately, the chicken was a bit of a let-down, as it had a breakfast sausage texture and was rather chewy.  At 640 Yen, it was a very expensive lunch.
